International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative

At the last COP19, the Brazilian government wanted to ban trade in Pernambuco by classifying it in Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).  The consequence would be immediate for the functioning of orchestras around the world.

In view of the proposals for action of the IPCI and all the actors involved in the production of instruments, it was decided to add a roadmap and terms of references for the maintenance of Pernambuco wood in Annex 2.
These include:
- the fight against illegal trade.
- the traceability of stocks and the production of new arches.
- replanting and use of replanted wood.

Preserve the forest by reconstituting part of its origin.

Work to maintain the finished bows in Appendix II to guarantee their free movement.

To fight against the eventual disappearance of musical culture linked to the sound of musical instruments played with bows in Pernambuco as we know it today.

Communicate and share relevant information on the regulations in force to our members.
